“WUD YA DO IT”, a solo presentation by Yeo Kaa
Yavuz Gallery is pleased to announce the participation of Filipino artist Yeo Kaa for the 2019 S.E.A. Focus. In this solo presentation, the artist gathers paintings that vent out anger and imply detesting someone. The works play around this trope in a range of visual and verbal expression, sharply contrasting against the artist’s characteristic bright-colored palette that evokes an opposing fun and lighter mood. Through a participatory performance involving life-size sculptures, the artist taunts the human tendencies and dares it to actualize extreme emotions into physical harm. Human nature is once again tested as the collection of works poses the question of doing it or not when one is given a choice. The outcome of the action and its effect on its actor is also interrogated, whether one feels redemption, fulfilment, regret, or perhaps just a cathartic purging which serves as a prelude to moving on.
Based in Manila, Yeo Kaa graduated with a degree in advertising from the College of the Holy Spirit. She has participated in numerous exhibitions locally and internationally. In 2017, she was an artist-in- residence at Sarang Art Space in Jogjakarta, Indonesia, and Arteles Creative Center in Haukijärvi, Finland. The exhibition is on view at Booth B-09 at Gillman Barracks, Singapore from January 24-27 in collaboration with The Working Animals Art Projects (TWA).
