Charles Levi Finalist in ‘The Fauvette Loureiro Memorial Scholarship’
26 Sep 2024
Charles Levi is a finalist in The Fauvette Loureiro Memorial Scholarship at SCA Gallery, Sydney, presenting large-scale textiles Quad and Fasten.
Presenting two new suspended works, Levi ponders the relationship between textile methodologies and queer narratives of socio-political activism and revolt, responding to British textile archives dating back to the early 20th century. Levi’s works carefully observe how the labour-intensive nature of textile craftsmanship—through its reliance on handwork and fixation on minute detail—informs radical queer gestures. He positions the needle as a primed tool for queer heraldry, present within the work through the guise of embroidered, coded symbols. Both works celebrate the catharsis that universally occurs when rupturing or piercing fabric.
Levi’s work is on view until 2 November 2024 at SCA Gallery, Sydney College of the Arts.
