Absurd Theatrics

16 Jan - 10 Feb 2021

Yavuz Gallery Singapore is proud to present Nicholas Ong in his debut solo exhibition, Absurd Theatrics. The exhibition opens in conjunction with Singapore Art Week 2021 and inaugurates the artist’s representation with the gallery.

Absurd Theatrics is the present culmination of Ong’s investigations into the varied sensations and sensory receptions in the relationship between the two-dimensional surfaces and three-dimensional spaces. Driven by an intuitive process, Ong’s practice is grounded in the inspection of personal sensibilities; manifesting in perceptual reasoning and contextual understanding though formal experimentations of paint and light.

Consisting of new mixed-media works, the exhibition continues the artist’s explorations of physical and psychological experiences, challenging the structure of precepts and stimulus as a medium for experience and dimensionality.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Nicholas Ong (b. 1995, Singapore) is a painter whose visual vocabulary is positioned within a lineage of contemporary abstraction driven by his interest in filmic language and the shifting moods and textures of cinematic tableaux. Ong’s practice is grounded in his exploration of the relationship between the two- and three- dimensional, and the rich, varied range of perceptions and sensations engendered by his experiments across both surface and space.

Ong has participated in various group exhibitions in Singapore and around the region, including: URBN. SENI, The Inauguran Triennial Singapore Malaysia Cultural Showcase, Urbanscapes Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur (2019); Why Not, Nanyang Technological University ADM Gallery (2018); and ‘Garnish With’, Institute of Contemporary Art Singapore (2015). He has been commissioned by the likes of Facebook, The Singapore Art Museum, NOISE Singapore. In 2019, he participated in an Artist-in-Residence with the Balai Seni Negara (National Art Gallery Malaysia).
