Isabel & Alfredo Aquilizan

Prototypes II

29 May - 25 Jun 2021

Yavuz Projects @ Sherman
16-20 Goodhope Street, Paddington, NSW 2021, Australia
10am – 6pm

Yavuz Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of seminal work from award-winning and internationally-acclaimed husband-and-wife duo Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan.

Philippines-born Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan’s collaborative practice is oriented towards the spheres of home and family, exploring notions of identity and belonging, journey and displacement, sensing presence in absence and accumulating memory. The artists continue to process these issues through materials and objects that, indirectly or overtly, serve as metaphors for everyday life.

Impressive in scale and pivotal in its undertaking, their extensive oeuvre, sees the artists breaking new frontiers by transforming fragments, for the very first time, of their widely-acclaimed temporal installations into permanent works. From sweeping assemblages of cardboard pulp and steel metal rods to houses constructed with compressed cardboard, the artists, who exhibited at the historic Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation (SCAF, 2008-2018), will present new commissioned works. These works chronicle the artists’ personal history and stand as a triumphant testament to their creative ingenuity.

The works of Isabel and Alfredo Aquilizan have been exhibited extensively in galleries and institutions worldwide, including the Thailand Biennale (2018); Gangwon International Biennale, South Korea (2018); Sharjah Biennale, UAE (2013); Asia Pacific Triennale, Australia (2009); Singapore Biennale (2008); Biennale of Sydney, Australia (2006); Gwangju Biennale, South Korea (2004), Venice Biennale, Italy (2003). Their works are included in the major collections such as the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation (Australia); Singapore Art Museum; Fukuoka Asian Art Museum (Japan); Queensland Art Gallery (Australia); and Lopez Museum Foundation (Philippines). They continue to reside with their children in Brisbane, Australia and Los Banos, Philippines.

The exhibition will be held at the premises of the former Sherman Galleries (16-20 Goodhope Street, Paddington). Prototypes II continues ‘Yavuz Projects @ Sherman’, the second and last of two international exhibitions organised by Yavuz Gallery in consultation with Dr Gene Sherman AM.
