Kien Situ Named Finalist for 2024 NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging)
5 Jun 2024
Congratulations to Kien Situ on being a finalist for the 2024 NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging).
The NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging) offered by the NSW Government through Create NSW in partnership with Artspace, supports early-career visual artists in their professional development.
Situ’s ‘HUOHEIAN ⽕⿊暗’ is currently on view at ArtSpace, Sydney. ‘HUOHEIAN ⽕⿊暗’ translates to ‘fire and shadow’, using ancient Chinese spatial philosophy defined by obstruction, asymmetry, and its opposition to the spatial harmony of ‘fengshui’ (wind-water).
“Old works have been shattered into aggregate and reincarnated; recast into new forms composed of Chinese Ink, Ash and Reinforced Concrete,” Situ writes. “With voids akin to mortise and tenon joints found in the columns of Ancient Chinese temples; a sound is emitted from their cavities – a heavily detuned brass temple bowl every 88 seconds.”
Curated by Alexis Glass-Kantor, Sarah Rose and Yuanyu Ali, ‘HUOHEIAN ⽕⿊暗’ is on view until 8 September 2024.
