The National Indigenous Times spotlights Brook Andrew’s upcoming solo presentation at the Sydney Contemporary Art Fair, celebrating his role as a leading advocate for First Nations knowledge. In her article, Rhiannon Clarke explores Andrew’s collaboration with Ames Yavuz gallery, where his work will be on display from 5–8 September at Carriageworks.
The publication highlights the presentation’s blend of historic and new works, spanning two decades of Andrew’s artistic practice. A focal point is the series of five new wall sculptures made from materials like sapele and ebony, which are historically linked to colonialism. These sculptures, adorned with Wiradjuri-inspired patterns, integrate archival photographs and postcards that recontextualise Indigenous identities.
“Through this exhibition, Andrew’s new and historic works address complex Indigenous knowledge systems related to Country, kinship, time, and cultural practice, offering a profound exploration of these themes within the context of his artistic vision,” Clarke writes, marking his collaborative presentation with Ames Yavuz as one of the highlight of Sydney Contemporary 2024.
