Pinaree Sanpitak at Setouchi Triennale 2019

Pinaree Sanpitak is presenting a site-specific installation at the Autumn edition of the 2019 Setouchi Triennale, in Honjima, Japan. Titled The Black and the Red House, the work is a “homage to that which has been lost in the vacant workshop of the last”.

Working with Shiwaku carpenters and descendants of the Shiwaku maritime force, Sanpitak will create an installation made from things left in the house and traditional crafts from Thailand and Japan, with an emphasis on the colours black and red. The artist sees these colours as essential features of Japanese aesthetics, suggesting charcoal and flowers of good fortune.

The entrance is decorated with a Thai flower wreath, and traditional kihd pillows are placed inside for visitors to use. The work is envisioned as a space where people can encounter lost crafts and traditional culture. Thai cuisine will be offered at another site on the island.
