24 Jan 2025
In a recent interview with Broadsheet, Kamilaroi artist Reko Rennie discussed his upcoming exhibition at the Melbourne Art Fair, set to take place from 20 – 23 February 2025 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Born and raised in Footscray, Rennie began his artistic journey in street art and has since evolved into a leading figure in contemporary Indigenous Australian art. In the interview with Adeline Teoh, Rennie described his creative process as “blending iconography, imagery and using different mediums to make a statement or talk about history and politics in this country.”
Rennie highlighted the importance of public art, noting its accessibility: “Having that ability to be seen and heard in a public environment is always really strong, and it’s free from institutional bias and wealth and power – anyone can have access to it.”
Known for addressing themes of identity, history, and politics, Rennie’s work challenges and inspires through its bold iconography and layered meanings. His participation in the Melbourne Art Fair provides an opportunity for audiences to engage with his thought-provoking pieces.
The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia is currently hosting Rennie’s Rekospective: The Art of Reko Rennie, an immersive exhibition celebrating his two-decade career, running until 27 January 2025.
